Managing Product Categories

In this article, you will learn more about how to:

To get started with managing your store's product categories, login to your WordPress Admin and navigate to Prodigy -> Categories.

Create a new product category

In the left column of the categories page, you will see the New Category form.  The first two fields that you will see are the only required fields for a new category.  The Name that you give to the category is what will be visible on the frontend of your website when customers are navigating by category or viewing a product page.  The Slug is what will be used in URLs on the frontend of the site when customers are navigating to a category page.  The slug can only contain letters, numbers, and hyphens.

The next optional field is the Parent category.  Product categories are hierarchical and work according to WordPress conventions.  So you can create levels of nested categories like the following by assigning a parent category to the child categories:

  • Women
    • Clothing
      • Shirts
      • Pants

The final two optional fields are Description and Image.  The product category description can be useful if you want to customize your theme to show a description at the top of category pages or in the product categories widget.  If you plan to use the product category shortcode to display a list of categories, you might want to add an image to display for each category.

When you are done, you can then click the Add new category button to save your new product category.

Edit an existing product category

You will see the list of all of your store's product categories just to the right of the new category form.  To edit an existing product category, just hover over the name of the category, and you will see several links appear.  Click on the Edit link as shown below to navigate to the edit category page.

You will then see the Edit category form as shown below.  These are the exact same fields from the create new category form.  You can edit them as you see fit and then click the Update button to save your changes.

Delete product categories

From your product categories list, you can delete an individual category by hovering over the category name and then clicking on the Delete link as shown below.

If you want to delete several product categories at the same time, you can use the Bulk Delete action.  Just check the boxes next the categories that you want to delete and then from the Bulk Actions dropdown select Delete and then click the Apply button as shown below.

In either case, you will be asked to confirm the action before the product categories are permanently deleted from the system.  To proceed with the deletion just click the OK button.

Assign categories to a product

From the Add Product or Edit Product pages, you will always see the product categories box in the right column.  To assign categories to that product simply check the boxes of one or more categories.  Then click the Publish button at the top right of the page to save your changes.
