The Shipping and Taxes section controls whether a product requires shipping and whether taxes should be calculated for the product.
This section also includes international shipping and special tax category settings when applicable.
Product Requires Shipping
Use Product requires shipping when the product is a physical item that needs to be shipped to the customer.
When this option is selected, the product can be included in shipping calculations during checkout, and you will now see a Size and Weight field to accurately describe your product for shipping estimates.
If variants have not been enabled yet, you can enter the product's general weight and dimensions in this section. If variants are created later, those weight and dimension values will automatically apply to the variants.
If variants are already enabled, weight and dimensions are managed at the variant level instead.
Note: Variant-level weight and dimensions are covered in the Variants article.
International Shipping
When Product requires shipping is selected, the International Shipping option becomes available under Customs Information.
Use International Shipping when the product can be shipped internationally. This information is used for international shipping calculations and printed customs forms.
International shipping must also be enabled in the store's shipping settings. If it has not been enabled yet, a notice will appear with a link to open the settings page.
Click Click here to open the Settings Page to go to Settings → Shipping. (Learn more about enabling internal shipping with the Shipping Settings article.)
Product Is Taxable
Use Product is taxable when sales tax should be calculated for the product.
Tax calculation also depends on the store's tax configuration under Settings → Taxes.
If tax calculation is not enabled or the store does not have applicable tax settings configured, selecting this option alone will not calculate tax at checkout.
Special Tax Category
When Product is taxable is selected, the Special Tax Category dropdown becomes available.
Use this field only if the product belongs to a special tax category.
Special tax categories may apply to products that are taxed differently because of specific product rules, exemptions, or jurisdiction requirements.
If the product does not belong to a special tax category, this field can be left blank.
That's everything you need to know about Product Shipping and Taxes. In the next article, we will cover Descriptive Attributes.
