Product Descriptive Attributes

The Descriptive Attributes section allows you to add product information that helps describe and organize a product.

Descriptive attributes are commonly used for product filtering on the storefront. For example, customers may be able to filter products by attributes such as Material, Vendor, Brand, Climate, or Activity.

Descriptive Attributes vs. Variant Options

Descriptive attributes are different from variant options.

Descriptive attributes describe information that is true about the product. They are not customer selections that must be chosen before purchasing.

For example:

  • Vendor: SanMar
  • Material: Organic Cotton
  • Climate: Indoor, Mild

Variant options, such as Size or Color, are used when customers need to choose a specific option before adding the product to cart.

Note: Variant options are covered in the Product Variants article.

Adding a Descriptive Attribute

Before an attribute can be added to a product, it must exist under Products → Attributes. To learn more about configuring attributes in Products → Attributes, check out the Product Attributes article.

In the Name field, select the attribute you want to add to the product.

Then, in the Value field, select one or more values for that attribute.

A product can have multiple descriptive attributes, and each attribute can have multiple values.

Adding an Existing Value

If the value already exists for the selected attribute, you can select it from the Value field.

For example, if the selected attribute is Vendor and SanMar already exists as a value, you can select SanMar from the value field.

Adding a New Value

If the value does not already exist, type the new value into the Value field.

You can then press Enter or click the option to add the new value.

A modal will appear where you can update the attribute and add the new value to the attribute's available values.

You can add many values at the same time through this modal. Once added, the value will be available for future products that use the same attribute.

Default Attribute Value

When adding a new attribute value, you can choose whether that value should be the default value for the attribute.

The default value is the value that will be selected by default when the attribute is added to a product.

Adding All Values

Use Add all values to quickly add every existing value for the selected attribute to the product.

This is useful when all values for an attribute apply to the product.

Removing Attributes or Values

To remove an attribute from the product, click the x next to the attribute.

To remove an individual value, click the x next to the value label.

That's everything you need to know about Descriptive Attributes. In the next article, we will cover Variants.
